Like me, you were shocked seeing two journalists killed in Virginia on live television. You may wonder why the National Rifle Association relentlessly opposes any regulation of firearms. Gun supporters insist any restrictions on ownership will lead to the government disarming us.
I gave in to this way of thinking in my political career, because I needed the gun lobby to get re-elected.Looking back, the hard truth is, this was a foolish position to take. A New York Times column recently pointed out guns should be treated like cars. Just because we license the operation of your Chevy, doesn’t mean you’re denied the right to drive. We take that right away from drivers with multiple DUI’s, just like we should deny felons the right to own guns. Yes, criminals will still get guns. They’ll also steal cars. But that doesn’t mean we should make it easy for them.
