Senator Rob Portman is a gracious man who helped me a lot in my career. In this town, just hinting that he isn’t the perfect leader is like criticizing the Castro brothers in Cuba.
Listener Feedback
I’ve been getting a lot of “hard truths” feedback! Some of my commentaries, like on the one on Obamacare, struck a chord. Paul writes, “where is it the church’s responsibility to provide healthcare? What bible verse? You are treading on some very thin spiritual ice, mr. Heimlich.”
Strict Liability
When my kids’ rooms are a mess, we have a policy, which in legal terms is “strict liability.” It doesn’t matter who did it. It’s their responsibility to clean it up.
Suspensions
A while back, the Obama administration demanded that schools ease up on punishment for unruly students.
Ruined Reputations
Our standards for disgrace are too low. Take former Governor Eliot Spitzer, who was disgraced just for paying prostitutes. We need more reputations ruined, not less.
Protector of Freedom
Politicians tell us America is the world’s “defender of freedom.” But for decades the U.S. has worked against democracy in other countries.
Jesus Hypocrites
Jesus was a merciful guy, but he didn’t have much patience for hypocritical leaders like we have in Washington.
Prostitution
It’s time to make prostitution legal. Yes it’s morally wrong but criminalizing this activity creates a dangerous black market – just look at the tragic consequences of sex trafficking.
Profile in Courage
There’s a moment in my Cincinnati City Council career I’m not very proud of. The issue was whether to hand out free condoms in low-income neighborhoods. I felt it was right but caved in to “family values” groups and voted against it.
Pro-Life
To receive the Republican nomination for almost any office, you need to have a strong pro-life position.
But here’s something you didn’t know: It seems being “pro-life” also means ignoring acts of genocide.
