My Daughter

I cried this week. I hate to admit it, but I did. My daughter, who’s not even 10, went away for a week. She’s spending the time on a lake with her friend’s family.

What Would MLK Say?

The movie Selma provides a remarkable picture of the “power of nonviolence.” It demonstrates how Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived out the biblical command to “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Why One Life Is Worth More

After reading a New York Times’ column describing the grief of the Samuel Dubose’ family learning their son had been killed by a former U.C. police officer, I had a question for the columnist.

War With China

If you think our country could easily win a war with China think again! Here’s something you didn’t know. A Pentagon report warns that Chinese hackers have compromised many of our most advanced weapons systems.

Minimum Wage

I support being generous to employees, but not by government edict. Cities like Seattle are forcing employers to pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour.

Mandatory Minimums

In 1986, Congress established mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses. The prison population skyrocketed and now we incarcerate more people than any other western nation.

Stupid Statements

Now that former UC Police Officer Ray Tensing has been indicted for the murder of Sam Dubose, let’s look back at some of the stupid comments about this case. UC President Santa Ono announced broad reforms for his police department before he even knew the facts!

End War on Drugs

Author Don Winslow has a message for you. End the war on drugs! It was unwinnable for the last seven presidents and now for President Obama.

Justice or Else

I was amused to see former Mayor Charlie Luken and local race hustler Damon Lynch, III congratulating themselves recently on the reforms they instituted after the 2001 riots. Of course, these guys prefer the word “unrest” to describe attacks on innocent people and looting of businesses.

UC Football

As a long-time UC football fan, I feel like we’re suffering from the “Minter Syndrome.” I’m referring to former coach Rick Minter, who produced just enough mediocre seasons to avoid getting fired.
